It is a fragment of the lake limestone of Beauce, dating from lower Miocene, which constituted, in medium Miocene, the sea bed of faluns when the sea settled down in Blésois. The rocky bottom was colonized by millions of pholads which dug these characteristic cavities. A shell of another species of pholad is visible by clicking here.
