The rays, quite as the sharks, possess a cartilaginous skeleton less favourable to the fossilization than that of the osseous fishes. But some rays also possess some osseous elements. Besides teeth, these elements are the caudal stings (situated on the top and on the base of the tail) and the dermal scutes which are scales arranged in rows on the back of the animal and which serve as support, for some species, to small stings.
